How to upload Homework 1

Hello all,

After a lot of back and forth with technical support of the software, it seems that it is impossible to fix this issue. (Really, we are all giving up.) So, I have an alternative way for you to hand your homework, but it will require a few steps from you.

To make sure that all are compliant with the rules, there will be a
0.5 point deduction if you fail to follow the rules. We may keep deducting 0.5 if you continue to fail to follow the rules. So, pay attention:

RULES

1. Remember that your homework is 1 single .do file. Let’s say your name is John Smith, then
name your file: JohnSmith.do. Just that, first and last name as they appear in the transcript so we can record your grade properly.

2.
Upload your (correctly named) file using the link I will send you by email. I will send the email using blackboard, so you will receive an email at your blackboard address. I will send this link tonight, so if by midnight you have not received an email about this on your blackboard email address, you must contact Alexis immediately.

3. After you upload your file,
send an email to eco231wsubmissions@gmail.com. Make sure that you send your email from an account that you check often, because we will communicate with you about your homework using this email. Here are the email rules:

a) In the
email subject, write:

Homework 1 submission

nothing else. This guarantees that your email will be recognized as a homework submission, tagged and organized with the other submissions.

b) In the
body of the email, write your name

John Smith

do not write anything else. This guarantees that when we search for your homework in the email by your name we will quickly find it and be able to verify that it is your homework, not someone else’s.

c) Then,
upload your homework to this email and send it.

NOTE

i) If you found a mistake and want to submit your homework again, there is no need to contact us. Just repeat the steps above. If we have two files with the same name we will simply keep the last one and delete the rest. Note that if you submit for the last time after the deadline, you will be penalized, even if your first submission happened before the deadline. For all intents and purposes only your last file counts for anything. Note: you can only do this a reasonable number of times (reasonable is at most 3 times). If we have to deal with too many files from students I will revoke this permission of submitting again, so use this privilege wisely.

ii) For the purposes of the deadline, we will count both the file upload and the email. So, make sure that you both upload the file and send the email before 5 pm tomorrow. Tardiness rules and penalties of the homework 1 announcement apply.

iii) I gave you a password in class. You will
not need to use it.

Classs are canceled today

Class is canceled today due to the weather (or rather due to the fact that all schools are closing due to weather and I thus there is no childcare). The curriculum will not be affected, but I will adapt the Class Plan to make up for this class.

TA activities

All TA resources are now open. You can see what is available in the Calendar page. Make sure to always check that page before you go to any office hours, as occasionally some of the times and locations change.

Contact page is ready

You can now use the Contact Us form. The form to contact me is working, and the Contact the TAs page is up to date.

Change to handling project time

Because the McKenzie lecture will be this Friday at 4pm, we had to modify the timing to hand the project. The project is due at 3 pm on Friday (instead at 5 pm, as it was originally announced). Please see the post Handing the Project for details.

No class tomorrow

Remember that there is no class this Monday. Classes resume on Wednesday.

Email form is now working

If you would like to email me, make sure to use the form.

Office hours and other information posted

We have all the office hours and locations posted in the Calendar. Note that we sometimes offer extra resources close to exams and other assignments. Check back before you go to any of these resources to see if there is any change.

Also, due to lab room availability, we had to move one of the Friday recitations from 10:25. Check the calendar for all the information.

You can now find the information about your TAs in the
Contact the TAs page.

Stata recitations

I added the Stata Recitation times and locations to the calendar.

No class on Thanksgiving week

In case you have not noticed this in the class plan, we have no classes on Thanksgiving week. Have a great break!

Grading office hours postponed

The grading of the replication is taking longer than predicted. You should be receiving your grades tomorrow. For this reason, the grading office hours for the replication will happen next week. Check the calendar to see the time and location (which will be the same as always).

Problem in Notes 12

I updated the notes, so now you can have the correct one. If you want to keep your old version, just cut page 2, and add at the end about half a page of the material from the end of the updated notes, beginning with “So, if we want to be 95% confident, the formula of our interval is: ...”

3:25 group room change!

The 3:25-4:40 group class will no longer be at Morey 504. It will now be at Gavett 312.

As we all know, Morey 504 is excessively hot. I requested a change and this is the room they gave us. I don’t know how good it is, but I am hoping that at least we won’t feel like we are in an oven anymore.

No class on Wednesday

Remember that there will be no class on Wednesday 09/23.

Introducing Fall 2015's Paper

The paper we will be using this semester is

Mathematical College Majors and the Gender Gap in Wages

by Catherine J. Weinberger. It was published in 1999 by the journal Industrial Relations.

We will be using this paper in the midterm questions, in the replication, and in the project.

Welcome to ECO 231W Spring 2017!

This page contains all the announcements for the course. It is your obligation to keep up with it. Here I post all the rules concerning assignments, and I also let you know if there will be any change. Did you read the Check-in page? That should be your first stop (find the tab at the top of the main page).

How to hand the Project

As you know, we won’t have class on Wednesday. To hand the project, you have to show up at one of the following times and locations:

- Wed 04/29 12:30-12:45 pm at HUTCH 473
- Wed 04/29 3:25-3:40 pm at B&L 109

Notice that you only have a 15 minute window while the TA will be at the room to collect the projects. You can hand your project at any of these times, it does not matter if you normally attend it or not. Someone else may hand the project for you. Make sure that you follow the instructions for formatting, or you may lose points. Make sure that your project is stapled. Good luck!

Deadline of Replication Extended

I am extending the deadline of the replication to Tuesday March 31st at 5 pm. All the other rules are the same, just adapted for the new deadline date. This will give you 4 more days to complete the replication. Use the time wisely!

Stata 13

Harkness 114 now has Stata 13 in all computers. The other computers in the university still run Stata 11. Unfortunately they will only update them in the summer.

Stata videos

As you know, I will be out of town this week. I don’t know how good my internet access will be, so I may not be able to post anything this week. In case I can’t post, you should know that your TA David will be posting new Stata videos this week. The videos will be in our YouTube channel (find the link in the Download page). He will announce when he has done so in the Forum, so be sure check it out at least once a day this week to find out when the videos are up.

No Friday 2-3:15 office hour

Your TA Zach will NOT be holding his usual Friday 2-3:15pm office hour this coming Friday 03/06. If you were planning to attend, please email him directly to arrange to see him some other time.

No class next week, also no professor office hour

This post is just a reminder that there will be no class next week (03/02 and 03/04), as I will be out of town. I won’t hold my regular office hour on Monday 03/02 either. This does not affect the course plan, because it was predicted before the beginning of the semester. The TAs will hold their regular activities as usual on the next week. Of course, all regular course activities, office hours, LHE, etc. stop for the Spring Break. Check the class calendar if you are in doubt. Make sure to get plenty of work done next week, enjoy Spring Break, and see you on the other side.

Password to upload the homework

You will need a password to upload the homework. I will be giving the password in the following classes:

02/23 and 02/25

Make sure that you come to at least one of these classes. Otherwise, ask another student that attended the class to tell you what it is.

Video definition fixed

Well, there was not really any issue. YouTube just takes a while to fully process the videos and then offer them at the maximum definition. Usually, at most 24 hours after we publish our videos you should be able to watch them in full definition.

The first video is uploaded

I uploaded the first Stata tutorial video. Check out the Download page. Unfortunately the video is not uploading at the maximum resolution. We are working to make this happen soon. Meanwhile, if you know how to upload videos to YouTube in HD, please let us know!

Email form problem solved!

The email form in the Contact us page is working now. If you need to send me an email, make sure to use that form instead of my regular email. If your question is of a general nature, ask it in the Forum.

Prof. Caetano's Office Hours

In case you did not notice it in the Calendar page, my office hours are now on Mondays 2-3pm on HARK 213. I originally scheduled them on Wednesdays, but we had a conflict with one of the lab office hours.

You can always find all the office hours times and locations in the
Calendar.

No office hours today

Hello all,

I am not better yet. In fact, I am slightly worse than on Monday. Because of this, there will be no office hours today. If you need to speak with me, write me an email. If I can help you by email, I will. If it needs to be in person, we will figure out if it can wait.

There will be class today. David will teach it. Bring your notes as always.

All the best,

Carol

No class today!

Hi all,

I am sick today. I am coughing since yesterday, and today I am even worse. I can’t teach in this state, so there will be no class. I will readjust the class plan to make up for this missed class. I hope to see you all on Wednesday!

Carol

Announcing new Stata section time

Great news! We will offer a third Stata section on Fridays 2:00-3:15 pm or HARK 114 starting this week. I hope that this will solve the problem of excess demand for the 1 pm section.

Stata lab computer availability

The Stata section TA tells me that there was overcrowding on the first lab (1:00-1:50) while the second lab (4:40-6:05) was quite empty.

I thought that the University capped the enrollment in the sections according to the maximum number of computers available in the room they gave us. I just checked the schedule of classes, and there are 49 people enrolled in the first section, and only 17 enrolled in the second. I don’t understand how this is even allowed.

Given the overwhelming preference for the first time, I will request a bigger lab. It may be that there is no bigger lab, or that it won’t be available at the time we need it. In that case I will think of something else, perhaps institute a sign-up method.

For now, stay tuned, and I will let you know about the University’s response to my request.

Homework uploading password

I will be giving the password to upload the homeworks in the following classes:

10/01 and 10/03

Make sure that you come to at least one of these classes. Otherwise, ask another student that attended the class to tell you what it is.

Beginning course activities

Hello everybody!

You had the first class this past Wednesday. Now it is time to make sure that you organize your life and get ready for all the class activities this semester.

  1. Have you read the check-in page?
  2. Have you made a note of the midterm and final exam dates to make sure you have no conflict?
  3. Do you know that you should bring the notes to class and fill the gaps there?
  4. Have you made arrangements to acquire the book?

If you answered yes to all these questions, great! You are ready to begin. Welcome!

CETL study group

The CETL study group is up! It will meet on Fridays at 2 p.m., and be led by Anne Elise, who is also your section TA. If you are interested, visit the CETL website to sign up and learn about location.

Calendar, office hours and other activities posted.

The class calendar is updated. It has all the activities related to this course, including locations, and assignments due dates. It also has the extra office hours and sections scheduled before important assignments. Notice that all TA related activities begin after the Wednesday class.

Email form problems

The email form in the Contact us page seems to be having some problems. Until I fix it, do not use it to send me emails. Instead, if you need to email me, use my regular email in this link. If you emailed me using the form, I did not receive your email. Please email me again. If your question is of a general nature, ask it in the Forum.
